Sentient - Vok Ens & John Derek Bishop
«Spellemann» nominee John Derek Bishop has for a number of years made a name for himself as an exciting voice on the alternative electronic music scene in Norway. Both under his own name and under the alias "Tortusa". Jazzland Recordings now releases «Sentient» an exciting and innovative musical expression in collaboration with the improvising vocal ensemble Vok Ens and Bishop. Vok Ens released their debut album in 2021, produced by Anita Kaassbøll. Six improvising vocalists now meet a musician with the opportunity to manipulate the already exploratory vocals. Bishop's live sampling of the vocalists spontaneously processes the recordings into new sounds and textures. Nuances in the female voice, textual improvisation and harmonies meet a harder electronic expression in "Sentient". The album was recorded during an intense recording period at various venues in Stavanger in autumn 2020, and will be released on Jazzland Recordings on February 17th 2023.
